Weekly Goals: November 23, 2014

Welcome to our new weekly series… Accountability Partners. As a start to the new week, each Sunday we will post a goal we feel will help the Maroons make consistent progress in our efforts to leave the rat race. We encourage you to do the same so that as a Financial Independence community, we can all support each other. Report back on your successes and set-backs. Know that someone is out there (in the vast universe of the internet) wanting to help you reach your own financial victory.

What small step can help you march steadily towards your financial freedom? Let us help keep you on track to making it a reality!! What is your goal this week? Post it below…

Today, I must say that I need to revisit my goal from Week 1.  We have plans to make a grocery run today. In my super quick meal planning and list making – actually writing down on paper what has been floating around in my head for the last several days – I realize that I have NO idea where we stand on our grocery spending for the month. I have a nice, neat little pile of receipts (paper-clipped even) in front of the computer. Thing is that no matter how much I may wish for, those receipts are not going to get magically absorbed by the computer, no matter how close, or long, they sit there.

How quickly we get side-tracked from sticking with habits… I did great at the beginning of the month. But have really not given any attention since then. I’ve seen a wide variety of snippets on habit formation – 21 days, 66 days, until it sticks, etc. But that is a road to travel another day.

Do you stick with your habits? What derails you? What keeps you on track?

Personally, I don’t have time to keep track of everything- too many other fun things to do! What we do instead is focus on something different each month. Like in October it was grocery costs. This month and next its not overspending on holiday gifts (I LOVE buying presents for people).

As for habits – especially health related – yeah, they stick about half the time. I think my main issue is time and energy related. I just try and forgive myself easily so that I don’t start dreading whatever habit it is that I am avoiding doing – because I find that if I start dreading it, there is no way I’ll pick it back up again!

I’m just trying to keep up with what our total spending for the month has been – so much easier to do a couple times a week instead of all at the end of the month!!

Great thought on forgiving easily. So much of life is a mental game we play with ourselves. Nothing is ever going to happen if we don’t have the right attitude about it! (Now Mr. Maroon is secretly rejoicing since he tells me that all the time…)
