Mixing Maroons - Spend Less, Save More … Get Marooned!

Goals: November 9, 2014

Welcome to our new weekly series… Accountability Partners. As a start to the new week, each Sunday we will post a goal we feel will help the Maroons make consistent progress in our efforts to leave the rat race. We encourage you to do the same so that as a Financial Independence community, we can all support each other. Report back on your successes and set-backs. Know that someone is out there (in the vast universe of the internet) wanting to help you reach your own financial victory.

What small step can help you march steadily towards your financial freedom? Let us help keep you on track to making it a reality!! What is your goal this week? Post it below…

My inspiration for this week’s goal came from a post over at Budgeting for More: The Extra Money Challenge. After reading about her aspirations to make extra money during November I recalled the pile of stuff staring a hole in the back of my head as I sit here at the computer.

NOT working for me by sitting in the floor of the office!

NOT working for me by sitting in the floor of the office!

In the little bit of de-cluttering that we have actually accomplished, most has gone straight to the donation center of a local charity. However I’ve convinced myself that others would be willing to buy some of the items. My pile has been sitting there for months now.

So my goal for the week is to take the time to get pictures and post the items online. I see a number of Facebook groups to sell items in my area. I think I’ll start there. Until now the time and effort seemed to be too much to bear – but no more excuses!!

Do you sell items you no longer need / use? What is your favorite method?

Giving credit where credit is due. You inspired me to get off my duff and get after it!

Good luck selling everything! I despise clutter, and keep boxes in different closets to easily throw “donate” items in. I know I could probably sell stuff, but between the kids and the job, I just donate things right now. It’s probably not optimal in terms of money, but it’s what work for us now. At least we get things out of the house!

Getting extra stuff out of the house is key. I choose to donate the vast majority of the time for the sake of simplicity. But found several items that seemed worthy of selling. In particular, the text books we bought specially to take the professional engineering exam. Most of those haven’t seen the light of day since that horrific day in October four years ago…

UPDATE: While Mr. Maroon spent some time ironing clothes this evening, I’m happy to report that I have pictures taken of everything from that pesky pile. Now to get them posted and ready to sell tomorrow… Goodnight!

I did sell textbooks and books online – through rebuying programs like Amazon and a few others. I was surprised that we got a few hundred dollars from that!

Amazon is going to be my first choice for the textbooks. After hearing your total, I’m even more eager to get them posted!

I am doing this right now! I have a few things on craigslist and hopefully will get these things out of the house soon!

Best of luck! Let us know how you fare.
