Mixing Maroons - Spend Less, Save More … Get Marooned!

Accountability Partners

Goals: November 2, 2014

Welcome to our new weekly series… Accountability Partners. As a start to the new week, each Sunday we will post a goal we feel will help the Maroons make consistent progress in our efforts to leave the rat race. We encourage you to do the same so that as a Financial Independence community, we can all support each other. Report back on your successes and set-backs. Know that someone is out there (in the vast universe of the internet) wanting to help you reach your own financial victory.

What small step can help you march steadily towards your financial freedom? Let us help keep you on track to making it a reality!! What is your goal this week? Post it below…

After spending entirely too long updating our budget spending last week, since I have not kept up with it for the entire month, my first goal is really obvious. We Maroons firmly agree that tracking our spending habits is a critical component to minimizing our expenses. Of course we are also both engineers and have an incessant need for the detailed numbers. So my goal for this week is to input every expense to our tracking spreadsheet within 24 hours of making the purchase.

Side Note: Yes, we are so obsessed that we created our own, fully-customizable spreadsheet instead of using other online tools available. In fact, as a newly engaged couple, we ventured into our first attempt at budgeting. Surprisingly enough, we pretty much agreed on the limits for our spending habits. However, the fur started to fly when it came time to decide how the spreadsheet was going to be organized!! I told you we were engineers.

I keep the spreadsheet (I won that battle), so this goal also requires Mr. Maroon to tell me about his purchases within the 24-hour window.

Now its your turn!!

I’m also pretty obsessed with tracking expenses, then learning where the leaks are quarterly and tightening them up. This was our first year as a married couple, but next year I plan to track even further, especially with dependent expenses looming! Looking forward to this series. 🙂

Keep up the good work with tracking your expenses. The cost of child care is enough to make you sick to your stomach. Hope all goes well for you over the coming weeks at the end of pregnancy and earning your new title of Mommy!

Mid-week update on our progress… so far so good!! Our various utilities bills come at the beginning of the month so those are done. And other than that, we only have two purchases from last weekend.

    How are you doing?
