FF #1 – Save those Berries!!

Tags: , , ,

As soon as you come home from the grocery store with berries, plan to soak them in a cool bath of water and vinegar. I don’t have exact measurements (I rarely measure when I cook), but I’d say a decent pour of plain, white vinegar into a half-full sink of cool water. I picked this up somewhere as a method for protecting produce, berries in particular, from the sometimes almost immediate mold that tends to appear and ruin those beautiful fruits. I find it to be so disappointing to pull berries out of the fridge just two short days after buying them just to find mold. Let me tell you… IT WORKS! I did this for the last batch of blueberries I bought. Blueberries are a bit tough for us. They come in that small container and can get buried at the bottom of the produce drawer. Mini Maroon loves them. But I have a tendency to forget about them. So I’m sure you’ll understand my surprise when our last carton of blueberries lasted nearly 10 days! 10 days if you didn’t catch that!! I was blown away.

In fact, I now soak all of our produce this way as soon as I get home from the store. It is a passive 15 minutes for great results. I mean I’m putting away all of the other groceries at the same time. It saves me precious minutes during critical meal-prep time, or the “Mommy, I’m starving and will surely die if I don’t get a snack in the next 5 seconds” look that Mini Maroon can give. Plus, vinegar is cheap. I see no need to spend money on expensive produce washes. That is literally pouring money down the drain. And it’s a very healthy, non-toxic way to remove what is added to our produce to improve the aesthetics of the product. What a relief to not be throwing food out just because it happened to mold the second you put it in the fridge. Win-win-win in my book… healthy, easy and FRUGAL!

So that’s it. There you have it. Stay tuned for next week’s new tip.
